Exploring the distinct cognitive skills of the dyslexic brain and sharing them with the community!
Evolving science has proven what we at Jemicy have known all along – that the cognitive skills of the dyslexic brain bring something different and valuable to the table. One only needs to look at the success of our students, alumni, and numerous famous dyslexic inventors, entrepreneurs, and artists to see their exceptional talents and capabilities. As experts in our field, we feel a responsibility to champion this reality and to celebrate these talents and capabilities. We play a meaningful role in dispelling long-held misconceptions about dyslexia as we provide understanding, build confidence, bolster self-esteem, and exemplify a can-do culture of possibilities.
Jemicy faculty kicked off the year by viewing The Dyslexic Advantage, a 2025 documentary based on research by Drs. Brock and Fernette Eide, creators of the film and authors of the book by the same title. The film moves beyond the usual narrative of struggle to highlight dyslexia as a powerful engine for creativity, problem-solving, and discovery. It highlights that dyslexic individuals are responsible for some of humanity's greatest achievements in science, art, and entrepreneurship.
In recognition of Dyslexia Awareness Month, Krista Weltner, who is featured in the documentary, spent the day inspiring our students on both campuses and was a special guest speaker during an evening event (open to the public). She shared her story as a successful author, illustrator, puppeteer, stop-motion animator, and dyslexic thinker. The event also included a motivating discussion by a panel comprised of Jemicy alumni Jason Michael Berman ’98, award-winning film producer and founder of A/Vantage Pictures and Harry Heaps ’18, assistant director of development at Rutgers Cancer Institute; Tiffany Garner, Psy.D., psychologist and educational evaluator; and Steph Jesse, Upper School English teacher, Jemicy parent, and dyslexic learner.
The audience came away energized and with a better understanding of the wonderful possibilities of the dyslexic brain. Jemicy will continue to remediate the challenges of dyslexia, but our hearts will always be firmly rooted in sending the powerful message to as many children as possible: You possess a brilliant and beautiful brain that is not broken, and your unique way of viewing the world around you is exactly what this world needs!
