Preparing Students for College and More
Jemicy’s academic curriculum provides a strong college-preparatory foundation in the core subjects and offers a wide variety of unique electives, with each student’s schedule personalized to address both their strengths and their learning needs. This year, representatives from over 60 colleges and universities will visit our Upper School campus. Over 95% of Jemicy graduates go on to attend a college or university.
Fall is “go time” for seniors who are working to complete their college applications and submit test scores and recommendations before the approaching deadlines. It can be a stressful time for students and parents alike, but the college preparation that begins as soon as our students set foot on the Upper School campus pays huge dividends by senior year. Our students are prepared and excited for the next phase of their education.
Students Ready to Soar
Jemicy’s academic curriculum provides a strong college-preparatory foundation in the core subjects and offers a wide variety of unique electives, with each student’s schedule personalized to address both their strengths and their learning needs. Structured literacy and writing skills continue to be honed, utilizing Jemicy’s own ParagraphologyTM program to help students organize and write their college essays. Additionally, essential executive function skills that lead to success, including self-advocacy, time management, and organization, are intentionally taught and reinforced throughout the Jemicy high school experience.
While many traditional learners, in addition to those with language-based learning differences, struggle with the standardized tests, they still play a role in some college admission decisions. We are extremely proud of two of our Jemicy seniors, Benjamin Diel and Samuel Rabb-Jaros, who were awarded National Merit Scholar Letters of Commendation this fall by scoring in the top 5% of all students nationwide who took the PSAT last year.

- Director of College Counseling Jennifer Williams is a leader in her field and recently presented at the National Association for College Admission Counseling on financial aid alongside Nick Orban of University of Maryland.
- Cortnie Amelotte, newly hired college counselor, offers valuable insight as a former admissions officer at York College.
- Additionally, US Visual Arts Department Chair Pauline Savage adds her support to our students applying and submitting portfolios to performing and visual arts school
This year, representatives from over 60 colleges and universities will visit our Upper School campus to interact with our students. We also invite college admission professionals to educate our teachers. A presentation from Calvin Wise, deputy dean of admissions at Johns Hopkins University, informed our teachers about how to write effective recommendation letters that best showcase our students. As more colleges go test optional, no longer requiring SATs or ACTs, teacher recommendations have become more important. Including personal stories about students’ strengths and character tells a more comprehensive story than grades or testing alone. Our college counselors ensure our teachers are equipped to strengthen our students’ applications with honest and meaningful recommendations.

At Jemicy, we realize there are many ways to define success. The goal isn’t always a highly selective college, but rather to find an institution where a graduate will not only be accepted but also will successfully complete the program. Over 95% of Jemicy graduates go on to attend a college or university, and 100% of all who want to attend are accepted into at least one school, many with significant merit scholarships.

Realizing that higher education is not the best choice for everyone, our counselors also explore gap years and other career paths for students who elect that path. Perhaps more important than any statistic or number is the fact that, regardless of the path they choose, Jemicy students leave high school prepared, confident, and curious about what comes next!
