Among students with language-based learning differences, an above average percentage are visually, spatially, and creatively gifted. Interestingly, these students are often unencumbered by their learning differences when working in the arts.
Visual Arts COURSES
Jemicy Upper School students must earn one (1) credit in either visual or performing arts. Visual Arts offerings include:
3D Design: Woodworking
Advanced Independent Art
Computer Aided Animation
Industrial Design: Kinetic Sculpture Race (a class in which students design, engineer, and fabricate human powered, amphibious vehicles that participate in the east Coast Championship of the Kinetic Sculpture Race sponsored by the American Visionary Art Museum)
The Visual Arts Program at Jemicy provides abundant opportunities for these gifted students to develop visual, spatial, and creative intelligence, and at the same time, build confidence, focus, self-direction and general independence. For this reason, art courses are designed to move from structured to more independent assignments as the student develops. Level II and advanced coursework are adaptable for those students who complete the introductory level courses.
Many students with executive function difficulties are able to demonstrate or develop those skills more easily in the art studio. For this reason, Jemicy visual arts units are designed to build executive function skills, leveraging student strengths in the arts to develop executive function skills in other academic disciplines.
13% of Jemicy Upper School students transition to Visual Arts Colleges or Visual Arts Magnet Programs.
