Jemicy’s Upper School Performing Arts Department is founded on the belief that when students with language-based learning differences and/or executive function deficits are provided free entry into a rousing experience of self-expression, self-discovery, and transformation it yields increased skill development, retention, and integration.
In order to obtain such outcomes, the Performing Arts Department is simultaneously predicated on the belief that only through the highest standards of excellence and execution will the optimum returns for our students be achieved. For the neuro-diverse learner, the performing arts allow students to engage with their academic and personal worlds through creative exploration.  Students have ample opportunities throughout the year to perform for their peers and for the greater community. These performances aim to enhance students’ appreciation of the arts, improve dramatic and musical literacy, increase confidence, and build community.
Troupe #8269
The Performing Arts Department is home to Troupe #8269 of The International Thespian Society, the national honor society for students within the theatre arts. Students earn points towards induction through their participation in theatrical productions both on stage and backstage. Having qualified for both the Maryland State and International Thespian Festivals, Jemicy’s thespians have been: continuously ranked superior (the highest rating possible) across multiple performance categories, selected for the coveted Festival Showcase, cast in the highly selective commissioned play at the International Thespian Festival, recruited by the nation’s top colleges and universities for advanced study, and received thousands of dollars in collegiate scholarships.

Jemicy’s Thespian chapter was chosen as the CHAPTER SELECT/STATE CHAMPIONS at the 2020 Maryland State Thespian Festival, held this January. The troupe earned another trip to the International Thespian Festival (this summer at the University of Indiana, Bloomington) and a place on the One-Act Stage at the festival, where they will perform their adjudicated performance of The Laramie Project.

We are so proud of our Jemicy thespians; they shine brightly in the spotlight! BRAVO!
The Upper School Performing Arts Department produces three theatrical productions each academic year (a musical and two plays) in the state-of-the-art Tomlinson Theater. These productions aim to provide students with a simulated professional experience within a safe and educational environment. In addition, Jemicy proudly participates in both The Baltimore Theatre Awards, our city’s professionally reviewed awards program, and The Cappies of Baltimore, our city’s peer review awards program. During the 2018-2019 school year, our thespians were recognized with 10 nominations from each of these programs – a remarkable accomplishment! This was in addition to being one of only 11 schools in the nation invited to perform on the Main Stage at the International Thespian Festival in June.
