KINETIC SCUPLTURE RACE
Jemicy Industrial Design: Kinetic Sculpture Race students design and fabricate human powered, amphibious vehicles, that participate in the American Visionary Arts Museum’s East Coast Championship Kinetic Sculpture Race (think physics Olympics meets the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade). Our design students engage in real world problem solving as they collaborate to design, build, and race vehicles that navigate 15 miles of asphalt in downtown Baltimore, a trip through the water of the Inner Harbor at Canton, and sand and mud pits in Paterson Park. Since 2004, the Jemicy School has entered more sculptures into the East Coast National Championship Kinetic Sculpture Race than any other team. Our students have earned 66 coveted ACE awards, requiring our pilots and their vehicles to complete the course while following an extra set of stringent rules (including no pushing the vehicle or swapping pilots). Local schools frequently visit Jemicy to learn from our students before they build entries the race.
