College Counseling is an integral part of the education program at Jemicy School. The goal of the College Counseling program is to ease the transition to college by educating students and families about the process and providing guidance and support during this important and very exciting time. Focus is aimed not only at getting students accepted to appropriate colleges but to have them graduate from college!

FRESHMAN
  • Students first meet the college counselor in a group setting.
  • Subsequent meetings introduce students to Naviance (a web-based college and career readiness platform) and discuss emerging career interests.

JUNIOR
  • Students determine a timeline and discuss college visits.
  • A Junior Class College Information Night and a financial aid meeting are held for parents.
  • SAT/ACT prep classes are provided, as well as discussions about PSAT expectations.
  • Parents, teachers, and students complete surveys to serve as basis for subsequent meetings with Jemicy’s college counselor.
  • Students take a college field trip, attend college fairs, and are encouraged to attend presentations given by numerous college representatives who visit Jemicy.
  • With guidance throughout the year, students develop a college list, prepare for visits, and request teacher recommendations.
  • Students complete applications with the assistance of the college counselor and English teachers, who provide extensive support to students for the essay portion of the applications.

SOPHOMORE
  • Students learn about test-taking strategies for the PSATs.
  • A Naviance “game plan” is begun.
  • Students are prepped for “early-bird” college visits.
  • A group visit to a local college may be planned.

SENIOR
  • Students finalize decisions about where to apply
  • Teacher recommendations are secured.
  • The common application is completed and submitted,
  • Transcripts are reviewed and arrangements are made for colleges to receive SAT/ACT scores.
  • Students apply for financial aid and investigate scholarship opportunities.
  • Students eagerly await acceptances and make the all-important FINAL DECISION!
Jemicy is proud of its record of college acceptances. 100% of our students who have applied to a college or university have been accepted. And, over the past decade, the vast majority of our graduates completed college in four years.

ABOUT NAVIANCE

Students use Naviance to research colleges, save college lists, research careers, request teacher recommendations, and keep track of college deadlines. They can save and change lists of schools as they move through their research and can also see how their GPA and test scores compare to the average accepted student.

The College Counselor uses Naviance to view each student's list and add other schools that may be appropriate. In addition, the counselor can post links or copies of important documents. Finally, the counselor uploads the school profile, forms, and student transcripts electronically - directly to the colleges/universities.

Teachers can upload letters of recommendations, complete forms for colleges, and submit all electronically.
