Megan McGowan (1995)
Head of the Lower School

Megan’s love for Jemicy formed at an early age as she watched her younger brother enjoy all that it had to offer. Jealous that she was not a Jemicy student herself (because she did not have what she considers the “gift of dyslexia”) Megan was determined to find a way to be part of Jemicy. She attended Penn State University where she earned her B.S. in Special Education. She then joined the Jemicy faculty in 1995. In addition Megan holds a M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction from Western Maryland College (McDaniel College). She is Orton-Gillingham trained and has additional training in a variety of other Orton-Gillingham based programs such as Project Read, Lindamood-Bell (Seeing Stars and Visualizing and Verbalizing), and Wilson Reading. In her time at Jemicy she has taught all grade levels and has served as a homeroom teacher, language tutor, social studies teacher and coach. She has served as Head of Lower School since 2001.

Tim Hormes (1991)
Head of the Middle School

Tim joined the Jemicy faculty in 1991 after completing his Bachelor of Arts at Washington College where he was both an Academic All-American and a Division III First Team All-American lacrosse player. He has served as a tutor, coach, classroom teacher, homeroom lead, and, since 2001, Head of our Middle School. Tim is trained in a variety of multi-sensory methods including Orton-Gillingham, Lindemood-Bell (Visualizing and Verbalizing and Seeing Stars) and Project Read. He played professional indoor lacrosse for ten years and was the Baltimore Thunder’s Most Valuable Player in 1997. In 2003, he was inducted into the Washington College Athletic Hall of Fame.

Mark Westervelt (1973)
Head of the Upper School and Assistant Head of School

Mark joined Jemicy’s faculty in 1972 and has been with us ever since. In over thirty-five years as an advocate and educator of children with language-based learning differences, he has filled almost every position: classroom teacher, administrator, camp counselor, language specialist, tutor, coach, Interim Head of School, Middle School Head, and most recently Head of the Upper School. Over the years, Mark has made many successful contributions to Jemicy, including development of the Middle and Upper School curricula and creation of a unique transition program that guides students and families from our specialized educational environment to public and private high schools and colleges. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Baltimore and a Master of Arts in independent school administration from Loyola College of Maryland. Mark is an Orton-Gillingham Fellow, the highest level of achievement in the field of multi-sensory education.
