Students progress from two periods of language a day in Lower School to three periods in Middle School. This intensive language study is ideal for our population of students as they are able to practice a wide range of language skills each day. The literature and composition classes mirror each other in many ways. Analyzing literature involves dissecting language to understand it on many levels. Students explore different genres, focusing on the elements of plot, character, and theme. They read poems, short stories, and novels. Composition class teaches the students how to effectively put language together. Through the use of graphic organizers, web-based computer programs, vocabulary development and extensive writing skill development, Jemicy students become proficient readers and writers. Skills classes are designed to improve
We use the Saxon Math Program. It gradually introduces concepts and spirals back to ensure the students thoroughly understand and retain the material. We group students according to math skill level; they move through the program at their own pace. Students learn, and review, fractions, decimals, ratios, proportion, percentages, integers, variables, unit multipliers and algebra concepts. Currently we teach through Algebra I in Y Group, yet program for students ready for more advanced math if needed. Science In the Middle School science curriculum, each class studies an introductory subject. Students continually work on overall skill development, with an emphasis on critical thinking, laboratory experimentation, research and oral presentation. Subject areas are:
Social Studies at Jemicy teaches students both content and learning strategies, including techniques for taking notes, memorizing information, presenting to groups and writing research papers. Students develop abstract and critical thinking, research and debate skills while studying the following topics:
Jemicy students are unusually talented in many creative activities. Every year a solid core of our transitioning Y Group students are admitted to public and private schools with advanced art programs. We like to expose students to a variety of options, so arts and elective classes rotate each trimester. Choices include: visual arts, performing arts, dance, music, and video production. Through creation of the Y Group “memory book,” students are also given opportunities to express their talents in very personal ways. Athletics Athletics are mandatory for all Jemicy Middle School students. Young people who are often convinced that they have no sports ability or competitive spirit tend to blossom in our program. Those who have skills in athletics learn kindness, team spirit, fair-play, and leadership skills. We offer soccer, cross country, basketball, wresting, lacrosse, dance team, and Hapkido. |
