In Lower School, students work hard to build their skills. In Middle School, they continue to build skills and add strategies to make learning more efficient and successful. Students in the Upper School acquire and practice additional learning techniques. Some of these strategies were developed for students with language-based learning needs; many are methods useful to most any high school student. Two Campuses Jemicy School has two campuses – one in Owings Mills for lower and middle school students, and the other in Towson for new 8th grade and all upper school students. Both are situated in environments conducive to learning. The Lower and Middle School campus is nestled in a quiet rural setting while the Upper School campus is more urban and students can participate in the life of the city as part of their school experience. J-E-M-I-C-Y. These letters identify the communities of students on the Lower and Middle School Campus. Calling a class by its letter name is a tradition at Jemicy that dates back to the school’s inception in 1973. Students are grouped according to their social and intellectual development; one normally finds an age spread of up to 18 months typical in independent schools. The Lower School is made up of students in the JE Community, M and I Groups; Middle School groupings are Star, C, and Y Groups. In Towson, our Upper School includes a pre-high school year called “Upper School Prep” as well as grades Lower School Building Skills: Our youngest students, ranging in age from 6 to 9 or 10, are placed in one of several homerooms in the “JE Community.” This learning community is truly ungraded, and classroom placement is flexible. Students progress from the JE Community to M and then I Group. Jemicy’s Lower School curriculum is geared to build each student’s foundation in reading, writing, spelling and math. Science and Social Studies, on the other hand, are taught without relying on these abilities. Students are free to learn challenging material that is commensurate with their cognitive level. The classroom extends to the woods, classes can be both quiet and lively, and students engage daily in variety of hands-on activities. Students get plenty of fresh air and exercise each day.
